I love concerts. I remember being really young—7 or 8 years old—and looking up my favorite artists on YouTube, watching each leg of their tours, and wanting to be there. I also love movies and am constantly updating my ‘favorites’ list. Even today, social media is full of people waiting in lines to see their favorite artists or movies that are sold out every night of the week. I’m fascinated by the brand marketing, audience engagement, and even their production setup. Each step requires a strategic thought process and plan that involves millions of dollars, countless hours, and months of preparation. So, let’s explore all of that together.
This has driven me to start my blog, Behind the Cameras.
Studying public relations at the University of Oregon has inspired me to share the knowledge I’ve gained and explore the unique intersection of the public relations industry with the entertainment industry, specifically through concerts and films. From recent films such as Dune: Part Two, Twisters, Challengers, Wicked (and honestly the list is never-ending) to unstoppable world tours like Taylor Swift’s “The Eras Tour”, Beyonce’s “Cowboy Carter” tour, and Charli XCX and Troye Sivan’s “SWEAT” tour, we will explore the public relations strategies, marketing, and engagement that made them worldwide successes. In contrast, I will look back at some of the most classic films and concert tours and compare them to see what remains the same and what has changed.
Why are classics, classics? Why are some concerts sold out, and others struggling to fill the seats? A behind-the-scenes strategy sets the stage; public relations campaigns. Everyone knows that millions of dollars are poured into the marketing strategies to promote movies, TV shows, concerts, and tours, but what really sets them apart individually?
I will also explore underrated indie and emerging artists, tours, and movies, as there isn’t a lot available about them, to see some of the strategies that are optimized to bring them to a nationwide audience. Through this blog, I can research and share how some people, artists, and movies gain publicity and how they do it. To bring in some different perspectives, I will look at the public relations strategy and events that go into filming reality TV shows and how they have achieved (and maintained) success.
What readers can expect?
The entertainment industry is ever-growing and continuously relevant. I am passionate about exploring the intersection of this industry and its close ties to public relations. Through this blog, you can expect weekly updates that dive into some of the most famous movie and concert public relations campaigns, and specifically, why they were so effective. Together, we’ll walk through the strategies, execution, and, most importantly, the public’s reception. It’s deeply fascinating to dive into why some campaigns are more effective than others when they use entirely different strategies.
